-Unknown
Communication is the relay of thoughts, emotions or information to oneself or others. It can be spoken, written, gestured, heard, seen, and more. However, most of communication is dependent on vision, speech or hearing. When these senses are impaired, alternative methods of communication are needed.
Consider these questions:
- Can you read the text on a computer screen?
- Can you safely and independently make street crossings at stop sign and stoplight controlled
intersections?
- Can you independently store/retrieve Information such as phone numbers, addresses, appointments, etc?
- Would you be able to use a computer on a potential job site?
- Can you independently read mail, newspaper, Bible, recipes, packaged food directions, medications, etc?
- Can you see playing cards or games?
- Do you feel that you are living life to your highest potential?
If the answer to any of these questions Is “no,” you may benefit from exploring the Comprehensive Vision Rehabilitation Services Program.
Bosma Rehabilitation Center’s Communications class is designed to maximize an individual’s ability to communicate with him/herself or with others at home, school, or work. The Communications Instructor spends the first several hours with a student, assessing his/her skills and abilities. If training is recommended, the instructor and student work together to develop a plan of individualized goals.
The Communications Instructor gives students the opportunity to develop a communications toolbox. Tools contained in this toolbox will vary but may include magnification aids; large print materials; handwriting adaptations; digital audio recordings and playback devices; talking calculators; Braille or other tactile methods; keyboarding skills; OCR scanners; computers; or electronic devices such as PDAs.
