Meet A Few of Our Valued Volunteers
Karl Keever
Karl,retired from the Commissary at Ft. Benjamin Harrison, began volunteering at Bosma Rehab Center in 2003 after being a client. He volunteered in the AT Lab and now helps the Administrative Assistant with her duties. Karl assists visitors in the Center, answers the phone, makes (Bosma) packets, and performs other essential duties as needed. Karl also assists once a month at the Hendricks County Support Group.
He and his wife Rita, have two children and a 6-month old granddaughter, Susanna. His hobbies are fishing, NASCAR, working around the house and cooking.
Debby Peddie
Debbie completed her rehabilitation program at Bosma Rehab Center in 1994, after losing most of her vision the year before. This, along with additional training from Crossroads, allowed her to pursue many activities of interest. In 2001, she was invited to serve as a volunteer at Bosma Rehab and in 2003 became a permanent volunteer. She helps clients learn Braille, as well as other communication skills.
Pat Thomas
After serving in the Navy and then working seven years at Allison Transmission, Pat Thomas spent 28 years with the Washington Township Fire Department. He served as firefighter, chauffer, Battalion Chief, and was Commander of the Hazardous Response Team. Upon his retirement in 1999, Pat was Caption of Station 221.
Pat is truly a jack of all trades. His varied job history has given him excellent skills in the Manual and Communications areas. He and his wife also volunteer in other areas of Bosma, Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, Trinity Fellowship, Special Olympics, and the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
When he is not volunteering, Pat enjoys spending time with his wife Janice, daughter Paige, and grandsons Michael and Nicholas. He also enjoys helping his best friend raise beef cattle, traveling, fishing, gardening, cooking, and working on his 1952 Chevy pickup.
Don Lane
Don Lane, a graduate of Tennessee Technological University, worked for the U. S. Navy in Indianapolis for 27 years before retiring in 1995. In 1991 he lost his vision due to a detached retina and the next year went through rehab at Bosma. Wanting to help others as he was helped, Don volunteered at Bosma from 1996 to 2008. Today, Don tutors math students preparing for their GED.
Chris McKirahan
Chris was born legally blind due to congenital glaucoma and lost all of her vision in 2002. She came to the Bosma Rehab Center for further training in October of 2007 and began volunteering in January 2009 when she also became a client of the Employment Services. Chris primarily assists with Braille and keyboarding, in addition to whatever else is needed.
Michael Kizer
Michael was born blind due to optic atrophy. He came to Bosma Rehab Center in June of 2008 for training and began volunteering later that year. He also is part of the Employment Services and is a volunteer at the Humane Society. Michael feels that Bosma Rehab is one of the better things that has happened to him and highly recommends it to anyone with a vision loss.
